Mama Tokus: Some Gospel Truths

A sing-a-longa-pray-a-longa, happy-clappy ecumenical expedition into faith, spirituality and belief-systems: from Satanism to Scientology.

This pseudo-service is presided over by Mama ‘Superior’ and features her own gospel and blues songs, as well as vigorous congregation-participation in the form of games and readings.

The Heavenly Jukebox will be playing vintage gospel sounds – if you grace the collection plate, that is.

Start saying your prayers: Mama’s in the House (of God).

Gospel Truths will be a co-production with Plymouth’s Barbican Theatre, through its Flourish development programme.

Such a co-production will be a symbiotic relationship: I’ll benefit from being exposed to the Barbican Theatre’s local, regional and national networks, whilst I’ll be sharing my local, regional and national networks of music and PR. We’ll be developing mutually beneficial audiences in areas new to us both.

The collaborative partnership with the Barbican Theatre will allow for knowledge and contacts-sharing between us, shared marketing and PR and the development and retention of new audiences for both protagonists.

In co-producing with the Barbican Theatre, there is an opportunity to share audiences – mine from the world of music, the Barbican’s from a theatre background – whilst developing new ones for both of us across the region and in venues other than theatres.

Moreover, the Barbican Theatre’s reputation for hosting and creating exciting, cutting edge work that goes beyond the walls of a traditional theatre space – plus its proximity to me as an artist – makes it the only choice in developing Gospel Truths.
